Common non-mink furs

Types of fur you may come across:

Astrakhan – curly lamb from the Middle East

Barluzin sable – Russian, shades of brown

Carical – the best is from Turkey, a mix of tight curls and long wavy hair

Matara – Seal, dyed reddish brown

Coney Island seal – sheared dyed rabbit with a lot of seam lines

Hudson seal – sheared dyed muskrat, lots of seam lines

Swakara – lamb from Egypt, long wavy hair

Things to check when shopping for a used fur:

Check the edges of the pockets, neckline, front edges and armholes for thin or bald spots. That indicates wear and usually cannot be repaired. Bald spots can also be moth damage, a sign of a poorly stored fur.
